Brunei, officially the State of Brunei Darussalam, is a small, wealthy sultanate on the northern coast of Borneo in Southeast Asia, surrounded by Malaysia and facing the South China Sea. The country is divided into two parts by the Malaysian state of Sarawak. The capital is Bandar Seri Begawan, and the population is about 450,000.
Brunei’s official language is Malay, and Islam is the state religion. The economy is dominated by oil and natural gas production, giving Brunei one of the highest per capita incomes in Asia. Brunei is an absolute monarchy led by the Sultan, who is both head of state and government. The nation became fully independent from Britain in 1984 and has sought to diversify its economy while maintaining considerable wealth from hydrocarbons.
