Liberia is located on the west coast of Africa and is Africa’s oldest republic, founded by freed American and Caribbean slaves in the early 19th century. The capital city is Monrovia, and the population is estimated at around 5.5 million as of 2025. English is the official language, but the majority of the population is made up of indigenous groups.

Liberia was never formally colonized and declared independence in 1847. Its recent history was shaped by devastating civil wars from 1989 to 2003, resulting in major loss of life and economic collapse. The country is a multiparty republic with a president as head of state. The economy is classified as low income and primarily depends on mining, agriculture, and foreign aid, with significant challenges in infrastructure, health, and education.

In 2024, Joseph Boakai became president after defeating the incumbent in smooth democratic elections.
