North Korea
North Korea, officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, occupies the northern half of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. The capital is Pyongyang. The population, about 26 million, is almost entirely ethnic Korean. Governed by a rigid, centralized communist regime dominated by the Kim dynasty, North Korea is one of the most secretive and isolated countries globally.
Its state-controlled economy is largely focused on heavy industry and agriculture, but has frequently experienced food shortages. North Korea is noted for its military posture, including nuclear weapons development, and its relationship with other countries is often tense. The government promotes the ideology of Juche, or self-reliance, and curtails most civil liberties.
