Panmunjom, home to the Joint Security Area (JSA), is the most famous section of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and lies near Kaesong, North Korea. It is best known as the site where the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement was signed, ending active fighting in the Korean War, and it remains a symbol of the division between North and South Korea. The JSA is the only place in the DMZ where personnel from both Koreas have historically stood face-to-face. Its distinctive blue conference buildings straddle the Military Demarcation Line and have hosted numerous negotiations, diplomatic meetings, and historic inter-Korean talks. Because of its historical and political significance, Panmunjom is often regarded as one of the most important Cold War landmarks in the world. In recent years, parts of the area have been demilitarized to reduce tensions, while it continues to serve as a powerful symbol of both conflict and hopes for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
