Allan Gardens
Toronto, Canada
Allan Gardens in Toronto, Canada, is one of the city's oldest parks, dating back to 1858 when George William Allan donated five acres of his family estate to the Toronto Horticultural Society to create a public garden.
Officially opened in 1860 as the Horticultural Gardens, it became a popular green space featuring flower beds, vegetable patches, and a pavilion used for social events and concerts. The original pavilion was replaced in 1879 by a grand three-story structure but was destroyed by fire in 1902, leading to the construction of the Palm House conservatory, which opened in 1910 and remains the garden’s iconic centerpiece with its neo-classical design and impressive glass dome.
The city took over the gardens in 1888, renaming them Allan Gardens in 1901 to honor the donor.
The gardens have hosted many historic events, promoted horticultural education, and evolved with enhanced greenhouse facilities and plant collections, continuing to serve as a vibrant urban oasis in downtown Toronto.
