Anjony Castle
Tournemire, Cantal, France, France
Anjony Castle is a striking 15th-century fortress located in the village of Tournemire in the Cantal department of south-central France.
Built by Louis II d’Anjony, a companion of Joan of Arc, the castle stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the Doire Valley and is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Auvergne region. Constructed from reddish volcanic stone, the fortress is easily recognized by its tall square keep and four round corner towers rising about 40 meters high.
Its exterior has remained largely unchanged since the 15th century, giving visitors an authentic view of medieval military architecture. Inside, the castle contains period furnishings, a chapel decorated with remarkable 16th-century frescoes, and richly decorated rooms that reflect both its defensive role and its later use as a noble residence.
Today, Anjony Castle is a protected historic monument and one of the main attractions of Tournemire, a village recognized among France’s most beautiful villages. It is especially admired for its history, architecture, and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
