Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso's second-largest city and economic hub in the southwest, originated in the 15th century as Sia, founded by Bobo people and later becoming a vital trade center for horses and goods linking the Niger Delta to the Gold Coast, with Dioula merchants establishing influence.

Occupied by Kong rulers in the 18th century and conquered by French forces in 1897 after alliances and revolts, it grew as a colonial administrative post with a military base, grid-planned avenues in neo-Sudanese style, and rail links by 1934, earning the nickname "economic capital" post-independence in 1960 due to its role in cotton, shea butter, fruits, and industry, though growth later shifted toward Ouagadougou. 

Today, home to over a million diverse residents speaking Jula lingua franca alongside Bobo dialects, it features the iconic Grand Mosque from 1832 in Sudano-Sahelian mud architecture, bustling markets, a regional museum, zoo, and cultural vibrancy amid agricultural plains, despite security challenges.
