Boloraberd (also called Proshaberd) is a ruined 13th‑century fortress in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor Province near the village of Vernashen, built and expanded by the noble Prosh family to occupy a rocky hilltop and command the surrounding valley. The citadel covered about 1–1.5 hectares and was protected by basalt walls, towers and an internal water supply system—remains of the ramparts, towers and water conduits are still visible today. Local tradition and travel accounts describe its dramatic medieval defenses and a legend about besiegers who located the fortress’s water source by tracking a thirsty mule; the strongholds were eventually abandoned after destruction and centuries of collapse left much buried under rubble. Boloraberd sits roughly 6–7 km from Vernashen and about 140 km from Yerevan, and can be reached from nearby Yeghegnadzor by taxi, a rough dirt track, or by hiking routes used by visitors to the adjacent Spitakavor Monastery.
