Geghard
Armenia, Armenia
Geghard, also known as Geghardavank or the Monastery of the Spear, is a medieval Armenian monastery in the Kotayk province, located about 35–40 km east of Yerevan in the steep, dramatic gorge of the Azat River near the village of Mets Gilanlar. The complex is famous for its unique blend of built and rock-cut architecture, with several churches and chapels partially or entirely carved out of the surrounding cliffs, giving it an early name “Ayrivank” (Cave Monastery) before it became known as Geghard in the 13th century after the Holy Lance said to have pierced Christ was kept there. Tradition links the monastery’s founding to St. Gregory the Illuminator in the 4th century, but the structures that survive today mainly date from the 12th–13th centuries, built by the Zakarian and Proshyan noble families, and include the main church (Katoghike, 1215), two cave churches, a narthex-tomb, monks’ cells, and richly ornamented interiors with khachkars (stone crosses) and bas-reliefs. Located in a scenic mountain setting with a holy spring believed to have healing properties, Geghard is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Monastery of Geghard and the Upper Azat Valley,” making it one of Armenia’s most important and visually striking medieval religious monuments.
