Boulogne-Sur-Mer
France, France
Boulogne-sur-Mer is an ancient and historically rich port city located on the northern coast of France along the English Channel.
Originally known as Gesoriacum during Roman times, it served as the main Roman harbor for trade and military communications with Britain, featuring important Roman fortifications including a lighthouse. Throughout the Middle Ages, Boulogne was the capital of its own county and played a significant role in regional politics with notable figures such as Count Eustace II assisting William the Conqueror.
The city became a center for pilgrimage due to its Notre Dame cathedral and was strategically important during the Hundred Years War and subsequent Anglo-French conflicts. In the 19th century, Boulogne transformed into a prosperous fishing and seaside resort town, attracting wealthy Parisians especially after the railway linked it to Paris.
Napoleon gathered his army here in 1805 for a planned but never executed invasion of Britain. The city experienced severe damage in both World Wars, serving as an important Allied port and hospital center during WWI and suffering destruction during WWII before being rebuilt.
Today, Boulogne-sur-Mer retains a blend of medieval architecture in its upper town, vibrant fishing activity, and cultural sites like Nausicaá, one of Europe’s largest aquariums, keeping its maritime identity alive.
