Boyen Fortress
Giżycko, Poland, Poland
Boyen Fortress in Giżycko, Poland, is a massive 19th-century Prussian hexagonal fortification built between 1844 and 1855 to block the strategic isthmus between lakes Niegocin and Kisajno, named after Defense Minister Hermann von Boyen and constructed under King Frederick William IV's orders using over 16 million bricks.
Designed as an artillery stronghold with a 2303-meter Carnot wall, four gates, and bastions, it housed up to 3000 soldiers and played a key role in World War I by aiding German mobilization and repelling Russian assaults in 1914.
After serving in World War II as a training site and being abandoned in 1945, it briefly housed Polish troops and food factories before becoming a major tourist attraction today with underground tunnels, exhibits, and events amid the Masurian Lakes.
