Bukkur Fort
Sukkur, Pakistan
Bukkur Fort, located on an oval-shaped limestone island between Rohri and Sukkur in Sindh, Pakistan, is a historic fortress with origins tracing back to the Arab period, around 944-45 A.D.
The fort sits on a limestone rock about 800 yards long and 300 yards wide, surrounded entirely by fortification walls that border the Indus River. It features bastions, gates, and towers, some of which are still partially standing, and historically housed a dense population of houses and mosques. Over the centuries, Bukkur Fort passed through various rulers including the Samma, Arghun, Mughal, Kalhora, and Talpur dynasties before coming under British control in the 19th century.
Its strategic position on the river made it vital for defense and control of the region. Today, parts of the island host a military school and a tomb, preserving the legacy of this ancient fort known locally by its original name, Bakhar or Bukkur, meaning "Dawn".
