Burgruine Neu Windstein
Windstein, France, France
Burgruine Neu Windstein, also known as Château du Nouveau-Windstein, is a ruined medieval castle located on a hill near the commune of Windstein in the Bas-Rhin department of northeastern France.
It is part of a group of castles including Altwindstein and Mittelwindstein. The castle was probably built in the 14th century by William of Windstein as a fief of the bishops of Speyer following the destruction of the nearby Château du Vieux-Windstein. Throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle changed hands among several noble families, including the lords of Windstein, Lichtenberg, Leiningen, and the Eckebrechts of Dürkheim.
It was adapted over time to withstand advances in firearms but was destroyed by French forces in 1676 during conflicts under Louis XIV and was never rebuilt.
The ruins still feature a residential tower, shield wall, barbican, and parts of the lower ward. Visitors can climb the restored tower and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding northern Vosges forest. The castle is classified as a historical monument and is known for its well-preserved architectural elements despite being a ruin.
