Castle Bydlin
Poland, Poland
Castle Bydlin is a 14th-century Gothic ruin on the Trail of Eagles' Nests in southern Poland's Lesser Poland Voivodeship near Olsztyn, built of limestone on a lofty hill by knight Niemierza of Strzała around 1388-1400 as a defensive residence.
Originally featuring a rectangular tower-house measuring 11.4x24 meters with 2.3-meter-thick walls, buttresses, multi-story rooms, and later a perimeter wall with gatehouse surrounding a courtyard protected by a rock-cut ditch and ramparts, it passed to families like Brzeziccy before Mikołaj Firlej converted it into the Church of the Holy Cross in the late 16th century.
Destroyed by Swedes in 1655 during the Deluge, briefly rebuilt, then abandoned by the 18th century, only fragmented walls averaging 7 meters high with gun ports remain today, freely accessible amid scenic Jura landscapes.
