Castle in Węgorzewo
Węgorzewo, Poland, Poland
Castle in Węgorzewo, northeastern Poland, began as a wooden Teutonic Knights' fort named Angerburg in 1312 near Lake Mamry, burned by Lithuanian prince Kęstutis in 1365.
Rebuilt in 1398 as a Gothic pentagonal stone fortress on a Węgorapa River island by Komtur Werner von Tettingen, it featured three corner towers, a courtyard tower, and an outer bailey with a mill, serving as a procurator's seat and defensive outpost.
Damaged by Tatars in 1656 and rebuilt in Baroque style, it later housed courts, a hospital, and prison before WWII fires; restored in the 1980s, it's now being converted into a hotel while retaining 14th-century walls.
