Castle of Fleckenstein
Lembach, Bas-Rhin, France, France
The Castle of Fleckenstein, near Lembach in the Bas-Rhin department of France, is a historic fortress originally built in the 12th century on a sandstone ridge in the Northern Vosges.
It was owned by the powerful Fleckenstein family for about 600 years and was known for its unique semi-troglodytic design with rooms, staircases, wells, and cisterns carved into the rock. The castle was considered impregnable and inspired the architect Daniel Specklin in 1589.
Despite its strength, it was captured without resistance by the soldiers of Louis XIV in 1680 and destroyed with gunpowder. The ruins include the lower well tower from the 13th or 14th century, a 16th-century stair tower, curtain walls, fortified gates, and many features showcasing the castle’s evolution over centuries.
The site is the most visited troglodytic castle in Alsace and has been an official historical monument since 1898. Restoration efforts have made the ruins accessible to visitors, who can explore the castle’s architectural stages and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding forests and landscapes.
