Château du Grand Ringelstein
Oberhaslach, France, France
Château du Grand Ringelstein is a medieval castle ruin located above the village of Oberhaslach in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, northeastern France.
Built in the early 13th century on sandstone rock formations at an altitude of about 644 meters, it occupies a dramatic hilltop position overlooking the surrounding forests and valleys. Originally associated with the powerful Counts of Eguisheim and later owned by the Bishop of Strasbourg, the castle played an important role in the region's feudal history.
Over time, it became a refuge for brigand knights and was ultimately destroyed in 1470. Although only ruins remain today, visitors can still see parts of the well-preserved polygonal enclosure wall, the remnants of a distinctive pentagonal keep, and a cistern built into the rock. The castle's design makes clever use of the natural sandstone outcrops, creating an impressive example of medieval defensive architecture.
Classified as a French historic monument since 1898, Château du Grand Ringelstein is a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts exploring the castles and scenic landscapes of northern Alsace.
