Chaguaramas
Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago
Chaguaramas is a peninsula located on the northwest coast of Trinidad, about 14 kilometers west of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago’s capital. It has a rich history dating back to pre-colonial times when Amerindian tribes inhabited the area, followed by colonial settlement with French and British influences focused on agriculture and trade.
During World War II, Chaguaramas became strategically important when it was leased to the United States as a naval base under the Destroyers for Bases Agreement, leading to the forced eviction of local residents. After the war, the base was gradually handed back to Trinidad and Tobago.
Today, Chaguaramas is known for its natural beauty, including forests, beaches like Macqueripe Bay, and recreational activities such as yachting, water sports, hiking, and zip-lining. It also houses museums reflecting its military past and remains a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking outdoor adventure and relaxation.
