Château-Dauphin
Pontgibaud, France, France
Château-Dauphin is a medieval castle located in Pontgibaud, in the Puy-de-Dôme region of central France.
Originally built in the 12th century by Robert I, Count of Auvergne, it was expanded and strengthened in the 15th century, giving it much of the impressive fortress appearance seen today. The castle is notable for its unusual double keep, six surviving towers, and well-preserved defensive architecture.
After periods of decline and damage, particularly during the French Revolution, it was restored in the 19th century and has remained in the hands of the descendants of the same noble family since the 18th century. Today, Château-Dauphin is a protected historic monument that welcomes visitors to explore its furnished interiors, historic gardens, and a museum dedicated to the region’s silver-mining heritage.
