Verified Château de Herrenstein

Neuwiller-lès-Saverne, France, France

The Château de Herrenstein is a ruined castle located in Neuwiller-lès-Saverne in the Bas-Rhin department of France.

The site likely has been fortified since the 9th century, but the current castle was built in the early 11th century by the Counts of Eguisheim-Dabo as a protective stronghold for the nearby Neuwiller Abbey. It faced multiple attacks and destructions over the centuries, including by the Bishop of Metz and by Henri II de Lichtenberg in the 13th century.

The castle was modernized in the 16th century to withstand artillery and served as a refuge for Protestants during the Reformation. It was bought by Strasbourg in the late 15th century and later owned by Reinhold de Rosen, lieutenant general under Louis XIV, who improved the fortress.

However, in 1673, it was destroyed by French troops and subsequently used as a quarry. Today, the castle lies in ruins but remains an important historical site reflecting medieval and early modern military architecture and regional religious conflicts.
