Château de Hohenbourg

Château de Hohenbourg is a medieval castle ruin located near Wingen in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, within the Northern Vosges region of northeastern France.

Built in the 13th century and partially carved into the surrounding rock, it was designed to control routes between Alsace and Lorraine and to help protect an important imperial road. The fortress was associated with the Hohenbourg family and later the powerful Sickingen family, who modernized it in the early 16th century by adapting its defenses for artillery warfare and adding Renaissance-style features.

Over the centuries, the castle suffered repeated conflicts and was ultimately destroyed in 1680 by French forces acting on the orders of Louis XIV. Today, visitors can still see impressive remains, including a large artillery bastion, Renaissance stonework, and sections of the rock-integrated fortifications. The site offers beautiful panoramic views across the Northern Vosges and the neighboring Palatinate region of Germany.
