Château de Kérouzéré
Sibiril, France, France
The Château de Kérouzéré in Sibiril, France, is a 15th-century granite Breton castle built for Jean and Yves de Kérouzéré, followers of the Dukes of Brittany and seneschals of Morlaix.
Positioned strategically and visible from the sea, it was constructed with a wide crenellated tower and defensive ditches to guard against English attacks. The castle’s construction faced delays due to disputes with neighboring lords, requiring royal authorization for completion.
It was besieged and partially damaged during the French Wars of Religion in 1590 but was rebuilt around 1600. The manor features four superimposed halls, a covered wall-walk, and private quarters, retaining some original 17th-century wall paintings.
Its moat was filled in the last century, and the northwest tower roof was restored in the 19th century. Today, visitors can explore armory, chapel, stairs, wall-walk, and a watchman's tower with panoramic sea views, along with a 15th-century dovecote on the grounds.
The château has been listed as a monument historique since 1883 and is notable as Finistère’s last inhabited fortified castle, offering a blend of medieval history, architectural interest, and natural beauty along Brittany’s coast.
