Verified Château de Landskron

France, France

Château de Landskron is a historic castle ruin located near the village of Leymen in the Alsace region of eastern France, close to the Swiss border.

Built before 1297, it occupied a strategic position overlooking important routes around the Sundgau area, the Rhine region, and the city of Basel. Over the centuries, the castle belonged to several powerful rulers, including the Habsburgs, and was expanded and strengthened to accommodate changing military technology.

After Alsace became part of France in 1648, the famous military engineer Vauban rebuilt the fortress and converted it into a military garrison. It later served as a state prison and became known as the “Alsatian Bastille.” The castle was largely destroyed in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars and has remained a ruin ever since.

Today, visitors can explore its preserved walls, towers, and large keep while enjoying panoramic views across France, Switzerland, and the surrounding countryside. The site is protected as a French historic monument and is maintained by preservation volunteers.
