Château de Lupfen Schwendi
Kaysersberg, France, France
Château de Lupfen‑Schwendi is a historic castle located in Kientzheim, now part of Kaysersberg Vignoble in the Haut‑Rhin department of Alsace, northeastern France.
The site originated as a medieval residence connected to the Habsburg-controlled seigneury of Hohlandsberg and was later expanded by the noble Lupfen family. In the 16th century, the estate was acquired by the influential military leader and statesman Lazarus von Schwendi. The castle experienced periods of conflict and damage, particularly during the Thirty Years’ War, but survived and was gradually restored over time.
It is now protected as a French historic monument because of its architectural and historical significance. Since 1972, the château has been owned by the Confrérie Saint‑Étienne, a renowned Alsatian wine society. The building houses a museum dedicated to the region’s wine-growing heritage, making it an important cultural landmark that reflects both the history and winemaking traditions of Alsace.
