Château de Morimont
Oberlarg, France, France
The Château de Morimont is a ruined castle located in the Alsace region of France, in the commune of Oberlarg in the Haut-Rhin department, near the Swiss border.
It was first documented in 1271 and originally belonged to the Morimont family, vassals of the Counts of Ferrette, before passing to the Habsburgs through alliances. The castle was destroyed between 1445 and 1468 following a war with Basel but was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries with seven artillery towers.
It was later sold to the Counts of Ortenbourg Salamanque and then came under French control during the Thirty Years' War, when it was destroyed by French troops in 1637. The castle features Renaissance architecture, including a U-shaped tower dating back to the 13th or 14th century, and is constructed from Jurassic limestone with vaulted cellars and artillery towers.
Despite its military adaptations, the site had limited defensive value due to surrounding high ground. The Château de Morimont has been a listed historical monument since 1841 and offers visitors ruins including ramparts, watchtowers, and an exceptional vaulted basement unique in Alsace. It is accessible from Oberlarg by a short walk and stands on a rocky crest dominating the local landscape.
