Verified Château de Pflixbourg

Wintzenheim, France, France

Château de Pflixbourg is a medieval castle ruin located on a hill above Wintzenheim in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, northeastern France.

Built in the early 13th century, likely between 1212 and 1219 under the authority of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, it served as a military stronghold guarding the entrance to the Munster Valley and helping protect the nearby town of Colmar. The castle functioned as an important garrison and residence for imperial officials during the 13th century.

As regional power shifted and other fortifications became more strategically important, Pflixbourg gradually lost its military role and was abandoned by the mid-15th century without ever being destroyed in battle. Today, visitors can see impressive remains including its tall keep, defensive walls, cistern, and the ruins of residential buildings. The castle is especially notable for its unique entrance design and well-preserved military architecture.

It stands at an elevated position with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside and valleys. Recognized as a historic monument since 1968, Château de Pflixbourg is one of Alsace’s notable medieval ruins and offers insight into the region’s imperial and military history.
