Château de Puymartin
Marquay, Dordogne, France, France
Château de Puymartin is a 13th-century castle located in the commune of Marquay in the Dordogne region of France.
It played a key role during the Hundred Years' War, being captured by English mercenaries in 1357 and later rebuilt and enlarged in 1450 by Radulphe de Saint-Clar. The castle was used as a stronghold during the French Wars of Religion, with Raymond de Saint-Clar defending it against Protestant forces.
Ownership disputes occurred in the 18th century before the château was abandoned, then restored in the 19th century in a neo-Gothic style by Marquis Marc Roffignac de Carbonnier de Marzac. The castle remains in the Montbron family and is noted for its blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture, richly decorated interiors, historic furniture, Aubusson and Gobelins tapestries, and 17th-century paintings.
Château de Puymartin is a listed historic monument and a popular cultural site in the Périgord Noir region.
