Verified Château de Saint-Thamar

France, France

Château de Saint-Thamar is a historic castle located in the village of Terrou in the Lot department of southwestern France.

Originally built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier fortified residence dating from the 13th century, it overlooks the Bave Valley and reflects several centuries of French architectural and local history. The château was long associated with the Colomb de Saint-Thamar family, renowned master glassmakers whose work contributed to prestigious French buildings, including the Palace of Versailles.

Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and renovated, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries. During World War II, the estate sheltered Jewish families and suffered partial damage when one wing was burned by German forces, although villagers helped save the main structure. The castle has been protected as a French historic monument since 1975. Today, Château de Saint-Thamar remains a notable heritage site admired for its historical significance, picturesque setting, and connection to the cultural history of the Lot region.
