Château de Vaucocour
Thiviers, France, France
Château de Vaucocour is a historic castle located in the town of Thiviers in the Dordogne department of southwestern France.
Built on the eastern edge of the town overlooking the route between Limoges and Périgueux, it originally served a defensive role by helping monitor this important corridor. A fortified castle stood on the site during the Middle Ages.
It was destroyed in 1575 during the Wars of Religion when Huguenot forces damaged both the castle and the town walls. The present château was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century in a Gothic-Renaissance style, while retaining traces of the earlier structure.
