Château de Wineck

Château de Wineck is a medieval castle ruin located near Dambach in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, northeastern France.

Built around the year 1300 for the Windstein family, it stood on a narrow rocky ridge and likely served as an observation post supporting the nearby Château de Schœneck, helping to monitor and defend the surrounding area. The castle was relatively small but strategically positioned. It featured a polygonal keep, defensive walls, a lower courtyard, and rock-cut passages integrated into the natural sandstone ridge.

Access was provided through a gallery carved directly into the rock, a distinctive feature of the site. Like many Alsatian castles, Wineck was dismantled at the end of the 17th century on the orders of the King of France and gradually fell into ruin. Today, visitors can still see parts of the keep, sections of the enclosure walls, and several troglodytic elements carved into the rock.

Now protected as a French historic monument, Château de Wineck offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval military architecture and the network of fortified sites that once guarded the Northern Vosges region.
