Château de Wittschloessel
Dambach, France, France
Château de Wittschloessel is a small medieval castle ruin located near Dambach in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, northeastern France.
Built in the 13th century on the Wittberg ridge, it was likely used as a watchtower and defensive outpost overlooking the Obersteinbach valley, helping to protect the nearby Château de Schœneck. Unlike larger castles in the region, Wittschloessel functioned more as a fortified guard post than a major residence.
It stood on a rocky crest and played a role in the local defensive network maintained by regional noble families, including the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg. Very little of the castle survives today. The site consists mainly of sandstone wall fragments, foundations, and traces of structures built into and around two rocky outcrops.
Despite its modest remains, it offers insight into medieval frontier defenses and the strategic use of natural terrain. Destroyed in 1677, probably during the conflicts that affected many Alsatian fortifications, the ruin is now a popular destination for hikers exploring the Northern Vosges Regional Natural Park, where it provides scenic views and a glimpse into the area's medieval past.
