Château d'Ochsenstein
Reinhardsmunster, France
Château d'Ochsenstein is a ruined medieval castle complex located in Reinhardsmunster, in the Bas-Rhin department of France, within the Alsace region. The castle dates back to the late 12th and early 13th centuries and served as the ancestral home of the powerful Ochsenstein family. The site consists of three separate castles built on sandstone spurs called Grand Ochsenstein, Petit Ochsenstein, and Château de Wachelheim.
Positioned strategically on the Schlossberg mountain at about 584 meters elevation, it guarded important passageways through the Vosges. The castle endured multiple conflicts over centuries, including destruction by fire in the 16th century that left it in ruins.
It was classified as a historic monument in 1898. Beyond its medieval history, the area shows evidence of ancient Celtic presence, with nearby ritual basins and possibly earlier sacred sites, adding a mysterious prehistoric dimension to the location. Today, the castle ruins remain a notable site for visitors interested in history and nature.
