Château du Haut-Barr
Saverne, France, France
Château du Haut-Barr is a medieval castle ruin overlooking the town of Saverne in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, northeastern France.
First built in the 12th century on a series of sandstone rocks, it occupied a highly strategic position controlling the passage between Alsace and Lorraine through the Vosges Mountains. Because of its commanding views, it became known as the “Eye of Alsace.” The castle was expanded over the centuries by the bishops of Strasbourg and served as an important defensive stronghold.
Its dramatic location on three separate rock formations makes it one of the most distinctive castles in the region. One of its most famous features is the Devil’s Bridge, a narrow stone bridge connecting two of the rocky peaks. Visitors crossing it are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the Alsace Plain, the Vosges, and the surrounding valleys.
Although largely in ruins today, Haut-Barr remains one of Alsace’s best-known castle sites and has been protected as a French historic monument since 1874. It is a popular destination for hikers, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking outstanding scenery.
