Château du Helfenstein

Château du Helfenstein is a small medieval castle ruin located in Philippsbourg, in the Moselle department of northeastern France.

It stands on a rocky ridge only about 100 meters from the neighboring Château du Falkenstein, separated by a deep rock-cut ditch. The castle existed by at least the 13th century and belonged to the Dukes of Lorraine before passing to the Wasselonne family. After suffering damage from a fire and regional conflicts, it was destroyed around 1435 and was never rebuilt.

Over time, the ruins became so overgrown and forgotten that their existence was largely lost until archaeologist Adolphe Malye rediscovered the site in 1927–1928. Today, only limited remains survive, including traces of walls, a well, carved steps, and sections of the former fortifications. Despite its modest remains, the site offers an interesting glimpse into medieval history and the rivalry of local noble families. 

Accessible by forest hiking trails, Château du Helfenstein is appreciated for its quiet setting, dramatic sandstone rock formations, and its close connection to the much larger Falkenstein Castle nearby.
