Château Fort de Fleckenstein

Château Fort de Fleckenstein is one of the most impressive medieval castles in Alsace, located near Lembach in the Bas-Rhin department of northeastern France.

Built during the 12th century on a long sandstone rock outcrop, it was the stronghold of the powerful Fleckenstein family and played an important role in controlling the surrounding region and trade routes. The fortress is remarkable for the way it is integrated into the natural rock, with many rooms, stairways, and defensive structures carved directly into the sandstone.

Its elevated position provided excellent protection and panoramic views over the forests of the Northern Vosges. After centuries of use, the castle was damaged during regional conflicts and was ultimately destroyed by French forces in 1689 during the wars of Louis XIV. Although left in ruins, much of its structure remains visible today.

Now carefully preserved, Fleckenstein is one of the most visited castle sites in Alsace. Visitors can explore its towers, rock-cut passages, and exhibits while enjoying the dramatic setting within the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park.
