Château Moncade

Château Moncade is a medieval castle ruin located on a hill overlooking the town of Orthez in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region of southwestern France.

Construction began around 1242 under Gaston VII, Viscount of Béarn, and the fortress later became one of the main residences of the rulers of Béarn. The castle was strategically positioned to monitor the surrounding area and important routes through the region. During the 14th century, Gaston Fébus expanded and enhanced the fortress, making it a prominent political and military center.

Although much of the castle was destroyed after centuries of conflict, neglect, and dismantling during and after the French Revolution, its impressive keep, known as the Tour Moncade, remains standing. The tower rises about 33 meters high and offers panoramic views over Orthez and the nearby Pyrenees.

Today, Château Moncade is a protected historic monument open to visitors, where exhibitions and restored features help bring the medieval history of Béarn to life.
