The Chongoni Rock Art Area in Dedza, Malawi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site noted for having the richest concentration of rock art in Central Africa, with 127 sites set within forested granite hills covering approximately 126 square kilometers. The rock paintings represent two main cultural traditions: those of the BaTwa hunter-gatherers from the Late Stone Age and the agricultural Chewa people from the Iron Age onward.

These artworks chronicle significant aspects of cultural history, including the transition from foraging to farming, the Ngoni invasion of the Chewa, and the arrival of Europeans. The paintings also depict symbols related to initiation rites, rainmaking, and funeral ceremonies, maintaining a living connection to contemporary Chewa cultural and spiritual practices. 

The protected rock shelters have played a continuous role in religious and social ceremonies, making this area a vital cultural landscape that embodies both ancient and ongoing traditions in Malawi.
