Majete Wildlife Reserve

Southern Region (Chikwawa District), Malawi

---

Majete Wildlife Reserve, located in Chikwawa District in southern Malawi, is one of the country’s greatest conservation success stories.

Established in 1955, the reserve was once devastated by poaching, but extensive restoration and wildlife reintroduction programs have transformed it into a thriving protected area. Today, Majete Wildlife Reserve is the only place in Malawi where visitors can see the famous Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino.

The reserve also supports cheetahs, African wild dogs, giraffes, hippos, antelope species, and more than 300 bird species, making it one of the country’s premier safari destinations. Known for its scenic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and successful conservation work, Majete Wildlife Reserve offers excellent game drives, guided walks, and birdwatching opportunities. Its remarkable recovery has made it a model for wildlife protection and one of Malawi’s top attractions.
