Chorley Park
Toronto, Canada, Canada
Chorley Park in Toronto, Canada, was the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1915 until 1937.
Designed by the province's chief architect, Francis R. Heakes, it was styled after the chateaux of the Loire Valley in France, incorporating French Renaissance architectural elements. Constructed at a cost over $1 million, it was considered one of the most expensive and grand homes in Canada, even surpassing Rideau Hall in Ottawa in scale and opulence. The mansion featured marble, Caen limestone, and lavish interiors intended for official ceremonies rather than day-to-day living.
Despite its grandeur, it was controversial and seen as an extravagant expense. Premier Mitch Hepburn made its closure a political priority and ordered the house closed in 1937 due to its high maintenance costs. After years of debate and negotiations, the city acquired the property in 1959 and demolished the building in 1961.
Today, only the bridge and driveway remain, and the site has been converted into a municipal park, erasing much of the physical legacy of what was once a symbol of governmental prestige.
