Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor)

Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil

Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world and a powerful symbol of Brazil. Towering 30 meters high (not including its 8-meter pedestal) with arms stretching 28 meters wide, this monumental Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ stands atop the 700-meter Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro’s Tijuca National Park.

Designed by French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski and built by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa with contributions from French engineer Albert Caquot, the statue was completed in 1931 after nearly a decade of planning and construction. Its face was sculpted by Romanian artist Gheorghe Leonida, and the entire structure is clad in soapstone, chosen for its durability and soft appearance.

Originally envisioned with Christ holding a globe and a cross, the final design — arms outstretched in a gesture of peace and embrace — has become a universal symbol of compassion and welcome. In 2007, it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, cementing its status as a global cultural treasure.

Beyond its architectural and spiritual significance, Christ the Redeemer has also become a platform for environmental advocacy. Recent events have used the site to spotlight sustainability, including a striking eco-carpet made from recycled plastic caps laid at its base to promote ecological awareness.
