Chutes de la Karera (Karera Falls) is a striking series of waterfalls in southeastern Burundi, located in Rutana Province just south of the town of Rutana. The falls span over 142 hectares and consist of six branches divided into three main landings, with the main cascade estimated at about 80 meters long and dropping into a large rocky basin. Water from several smaller cascades converges on these levels, creating a multi‑tiered, forest‑wrapped spectacle set within dense gallery forest and verdant hills. The site is both a natural monument and a tourist attraction, often described as one of the most scenic waterfalls in the country, with walking paths and viewpoints that let visitors enjoy the rush of the falls, the lush surroundings, and some believed‑to‑have‑healing qualities of the water. Chutes de la Karera, together with the nearby Nyakazu Fault, has also been placed on Burundi’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as a mixed natural and cultural site.
