Burundi
Burundi is a landlocked country in East-Central Africa, bordered by Rwanda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a population of over 13 million. Gitega is the political capital, and Bujumbura is the economic capital. The official languages are Kirundi, French, and English. The population is predominantly Hutu, with Tutsi and Twa minorities.
Burundi has a history of ethnic violence, civil war, and political instability. Since gaining independence from Belgium in 1962, the country has experienced repeated coups and authoritarian rule. The economy is underdeveloped, primarily based on subsistence agriculture, and Burundi remains among the world’s poorest nations. The political system is a presidential republic, currently led by President Évariste Ndayishimiye.
