Colca Canyon
Arequipa Region, Peru
Colca Canyon is a huge and beautiful canyon located in southern Peru, about 160km northwest of the city of Arequipa. It is considered one of the deepest canyons in the world, with parts dropping up to 3,191 meters (10,470 feet), nearly twice the depth of the Grand Canyon. The canyon stretches along the Colca River for about 70 to 100 kilometers, offering stunning views of the nearby Andes mountains such as the tall, snow-capped Ampato Volcano.
The area is famous for its dramatic landscapes, ranging from steep rocky cliffs to green agricultural terraces that date back to pre-Inca times. Local people, mainly from the Collagua and Cabana cultures, still farm these ancient terraces and live in small villages scattered through the valley. Some of the oldest traditions, festivals, and crafts are still alive here, including colorful embroidery and handmade alpaca goods.
Colca Canyon is a popular tourist destination in Peru, known for its opportunities for hiking and adventure. Hiking trails follow the canyon rim and descend to the river below, and there are several lookout points for viewing the famous Andean condors. These large birds glide on the thermal updrafts and can often be seen soaring over the canyon, especially at a lookout called Cruz del Condor.
Chivay, a small town at the gateway to the canyon, is a starting point for many visits. It is also known for its hot springs, where travelers can relax in mineral-rich waters. Other villages along the canyon, like Cabanaconde, Yanque, and Maca, offer colonial churches, local markets, and a glimpse of rural Andean life.
The Colca Canyon region is home to a rich variety of animals and plants, including llamas, alpacas, cacti, and rare high-altitude plants. The climate can change quickly, from cold nights at higher altitudes to warmer temperatures in the lower parts of the canyon.
