Cracow Archibishops' castle
Sławków, Poland, Poland
Cracow Archbishops' castle in Sławków, southern Poland, is a 13th-century Gothic ruin—one of the earliest stone fortifications in southern Poland—built between 1280-1283 by Bishop Paweł of Przemanków on a slope overlooking the Biała Przemsza River to defend the town and river crossing from Kraków.
Measuring 124 x 90 meters with 2-3 meter thick walls rising 6-7 meters, it featured a residential tower, gatehouse, central rectangular half-bastions, earth ramparts, and moat, rivaling contemporary Piast dukes' castles in Opole and Wrocław, but construction halted in 1283 when Prince Leszek Czarny seized it amid bishop-prince conflicts.
Occupied by Bohemian troops in 1327 and Hungarians thereafter until Bishop Jan Grot reclaimed it via papal intervention by 1337, it saw further use into the 16th century per 1536/1537 views showing an intact tower, though bishops later favored a nearby manor, leading to its abandonment and 1455 destruction without rebuild.
