Debre Damo Monastery
Tigray Region, Ethiopia
The Debre Damo Monastery is one of Ethiopia’s oldest and most important Christian monasteries, located atop a flat-topped mountain in the Tigray Region. Traditionally founded in the 6th century by Abuna Aregawi, the monastery is renowned for its ancient Aksumite-style church, valuable collection of manuscripts, and long-standing role as a centre of Ethiopian Orthodox religious learning. Its remote location is especially famous because access is gained by climbing a rope up a steep cliff, a tradition that has been maintained for centuries. The monastery remains a significant spiritual and cultural landmark and is traditionally accessible only to men.
