Debre Libanos Monastery is one of Ethiopia’s most important religious sites, located northwest of Addis Ababa in the Oromia Region.
Founded in 1284 by Saint Tekle Haymanot, it became a major centre of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and a place of pilgrimage and religious learning. Set amid dramatic cliffs and overlooking the Jemma River Gorge, the monastery is known for its beautiful church, historic spiritual significance, nearby sacred cave associated with its founder, and its role in preserving Ethiopia’s rich Christian heritage.
