Devonian Gardens
Calgary, Canada, Canada
Devonian Gardens is a large indoor park and botanical garden located in downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on the 4th floor (Level 4) of The CORE Shopping Centre at 317 7 Avenue SW, between 2nd and 3rd Streets on the Stephen Avenue pedestrian mall.
Opened in 1977 and designed by J.H. Cook Architects and Engineers, the gardens were donated to the City of Calgary by the Devonian Group of Charitable Foundations and Calford Properties, and they attracted international attention when they first opened. The park covers 2.5 acres (about 1 hectare) on the top floor, is completely enclosed with glass, and is maintained by the City of Calgary Parks as Calgary's only indoor park, open year-round with tropical plants, natural light, and balmy temperatures regardless of the outdoor weather.
The gardens feature over 550 trees, more than 50 varieties of plants (some from tropical locales), a 900-square-foot living wall that acts as a natural biofilter to clean the air, koi fish ponds with animated water features, fountains, a children's playground for climbing and exploring, meandering walkways, tree-decked plazas, flexible seating areas, and spaces for meetings and special events including weddings, corporate functions, and photography sessions.
