Donjon de Houdan
Houdan, France, France
Donjon de Houdan is a well-preserved early 12th-century keep in Houdan, Yvelines, France, built around 1120-1137 by Amaury III de Montfort as a symbol of feudal power rather than primary military defense.
This isolated cylindrical tower, 25 meters tall and 16 meters in diameter with four semi-circular turrets and 3-meter-thick walls, represents a transitional design improving flanking fire capabilities between rectangular and later round keeps.
Never captured historically, it later served as a prison, storage, and water tower from 1880 to 1970 before becoming a classified monument in 1889, now offering panoramic views and cultural events atop its ancient Merovingian necropolis site.
