Donjon de Maurepas
Maurepas, France, France
The Donjon de Maurepas is the main surviving part of a medieval castle located in the town of Maurepas.
The stone tower dates largely from the 12th century and stands about 20 meters high, making it an important reminder of the area's feudal past. The fortress was built to oversee and defend the surrounding region, but it suffered heavily during the Hundred Years' War.
English forces captured the site in the 15th century, and the castle was later dismantled, leaving only the keep as a significant remnant. Today, the Donjon de Maurepas is a protected historic monument and one of the oldest landmarks in the town. Its ruins offer visitors a glimpse into medieval military architecture and the long history of the Île-de-France region.
