Etnobotánico Omora Park
Chile, Chile
The Etnobotánico Omora Park, also known as Omora Ethnobotanical Park, is a 1,000‑hectare protected area and botanical site in the far south of Chile, on the northern part of Navarino Island above the Beagle Channel, about 2–4 kilometers from the town of Puerto Williams.
Founded in 2000, it functions both as a scientific research and conservation center for the Sub‑Antarctic Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve and as an open‑air botanical garden that showcases the region’s unique sub‑Antarctic forests, including lenga and ñirre woods, evergreen coigüe, canelo, and wetland and peat‑bog ecosystems.
The park focuses on “biocultural conservation,” blending ecology, local Yagán and Kawésqar heritage, and environmental philosophy, and offers guided ecotourism with its signature “Ecotourism with a Hand Lens” approach that highlights tiny mosses, lichens, and micro‑forests, making it a key site for education, research, and responsible nature tourism at the southern tip of South America.
